New Sustainable Investments by 2030

Nikaia – Agios Ioannis Rentis Municipality located in the Attica Prefecture, developed a Municipal Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) within the framework of the Covenant of Mayors Initiative. EPTA S.A. technically supported the Municipality to compile the SEAP and pinpoint the appropriate measures to reduce Municipal CO2 emissions at least by 40% until the year 2030.

According to the Baseline Emission Inventory (BEI), in 2014, 9.6 thousand tonnes of CO2 were emitted within the region of Nikaia – Agios Ioannis Rentis from municipal activities. Approximately 53% of the emissions came from public lighting, 38% from municipal buildings and 9% from municipal vehicles.

The SEAP proposes measures and activities to be implemented in every sector including:

  1. Municipal Buildings
  2. Road Lighting
  3. Renewable Energy Resources
  4. Municipal Vehicles

The Municipality has already started to implement measures for improving its energy efficiency, such as upgrading the energy efficiency of school buildings, the swimming pool of Platon Sports’ Complex and the installation of photovoltaics on rooftops’ school buildings. Moreover, Municipal’s public lighting upgrade of approximately 9.500 luminaires will take place in due time.

The implementation of the actions proposed in the SEAP will lead to an estimated carbon footprint reduction of 60% for the Nikaia – Agios Ioannis Rentis Municipality. At the same time, these actions will act as a role model for citizens and enterprises (residential and tertiary sectors), as well as the industrial sector. These sectors, in turn, will be motivated  for investing in similar energy efficiency solutions and the installation of Renewable Energy Systems on their premises.
