The n-ZeroWaste programme, the first fully integrated circular waste management model in the hospitality sector, has been awarded the Gold Award at the Circular Economy Awards 2026.
Developed by EPTA S.A. (epta.gr) and implemented by the Mitsis Group in four hotel properties in Hersonissos, Crete, the initiative introduces a holistic operational framework that reorganizes how waste is managed in large-scale hospitality facilities — from separation at source to monitoring performance and engaging guests.
The programme restructures daily hotel operations through mapping of waste streams, expansion of source-separation practices and dedicated collection procedures for packaging materials, food waste and special waste categories. Waste management areas were redesigned and equipped for safe temporary storage, while standardized collection and transportation processes were introduced.
A KPI monitoring system, cost-benefit analysis tools and an extensive staff training programme support continuous performance improvement, complemented by guest awareness initiatives that actively involve visitors in the circular process.
Measurable results
The implementation of n-ZeroWaste demonstrates that circular economy practices can directly enhance operational efficiency:
- Up to 75% reuse and recycling rate
- Approximately 800 tonnes of waste diverted from landfill annually
- More than 80 tonnes of CO₂-eq emissions avoided per year
- 16% reduction in operating costs
Through this initiative, the Mitsis Group establishes n-ZeroWaste as a practical operational benchmark for the Greek tourism sector, proving that environmental responsibility and business efficiency can coexist while generating measurable environmental and economic value.
